Enjoy hiking to the top of active volcanoes in Africa. The most hiked active Volcano is Nyiragongo mountain situated in the heart of Virunga National park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The summit of Nyiragongo Volcano shelters 2 kilometers boiling lava lake which last exploded in 2002 destroying the city of Goma up to its present state. The volcano stands at 11500 feet (8.5km)above the sea level overlooking the Virunga gorilla national park and is one of the 8 volcanoes in the Virunga conservation area. Hiking to the summit takes roughly 6-7 hours depending on the speed of the slowest person in the group. The day fo hiking Mount Nyiragongo is preceded by s simple briefing about safety tips and guidelines at the base of the volcano. Hiking starts off at 10:00 am at Kabita patrol station.

The hiking tips for Nyiragongo Volcano include:

  • Carry enough drinking water
  • Sleeping gear is a must
  • Wear hiking boots and gardening gloves
  • Hire a porter to carry your bags
  • Be at the starting point by 10:00am
  • Book and reserve your hiking permit in advance
  • Travelers below 12 years are not allowed
